Interface Management in Product Development

Efficient working methods in the matrix organization

In recent years, the product development process has become much more important, as the demands on the process are constantly increasing, while the desired lead time is becoming shorter and shorter. To meet these challenges, TARGUS has developed a process model with clearly defined cornerstones, responsibilities, and deliverables. The result is a PID (Project Interfaces & Deliverables) project map adapted to the requirements, which represents the framework for project execution and shows the essential deliverables and interfaces in the product development process from the initial product concept to the market launch or handover to the customer. TARGUS’ experience ranges from small and large series in medical technology to large-scale projects in shipbuilding and covers the development of individual products or entire product portfolios.

Proven methodology and stringent implementation

The PID methodology defines measurable intermediate goals in the form of deliverables as well as clear responsibilities at the project/line organization interfaces. Each deliverable is captured in a PID cornerstone, there is a common understanding of content, completeness, and metrics. The PID project map thus becomes the central element of project control and regulates the cooperation between project and line organization.

Clear focus on results and objectives

The cornerstone map ensures that all departments strive for results / deliverables and that deviations – e.g., due to resource restrictions – can be identified at an early stage. Stringent project management based on this structure thus reduces project risks and costs as well as the overall lead time. At the same time, the map creates a basis for the continuous development of project competencies because of learning effects.

Project results

  • Cornerstone map as a central element of project control

  • Clear responsibilities at the interfaces

  • Reduction of project duration and costs
